Dr Paulin Tay Straughan

Dr Paulin Tay Straughan is a Professor of Sociology and Dean at Singapore Management University. From 2009 to 2012, Dr Straughan served as a Nominated Member of Parliament, where she argued for better work-life balance and a more pro-family social environment. She received the Public Administrative Medal, Prime Minister's Office in 2010. In 2018, Dr Straughan was appointed as one of the 86 Justice of Peace by President Halimah Yacob.

“The privilege of youth is that you get to explore. Whether or not that is the best job for you, you wouldn’t know unless you try.” This quote by Dr Straughan aptly reflects her experience and wisdom, and we hope that her experiences will be able to inspire student leaders to pursue their interests and encourage them to fulfil their leadership abilities to the greatest potential.

Ms Siti Noor Mastura

Ms Siti Noor Mastura, a young champion for interfaith work, is a recipient of The Straits Times Singaporean of the Year Award in 2018. As a co-founder of the Interfaith Youth Circle, Ms Noor Mastura seeks to promote a better understanding of the role that faith groups can play in an increasingly complex and divided world.

Given her impressive accolades, it is difficult to imagine a time when Ms Noor Mastura was not the accomplished activist she is today. However, Ms Noor Mastura has actually been through her fair share of struggles, enduring starvation and bouts of homelessness during her early teenage years. These challenges have instilled in her a steely determination and strong passion to serve those in need, which led to her also starting a non-profit group Back2Basics, which delivers halal-certified groceries directly to the doorsteps of disadvantaged families, such as the home-bound elderly and single mothers.

We hope that Ms Noor Mastura’s experiences will be able to inspire student leaders to pursue their interests and encourage them to fulfil their leadership abilities to the greatest potential.
